Swimming Lessons - Week 6

Today is Peanut's 8 month birthday and to celebrate, we dunked him underwater. This is lesson 6 of 19, but technically it is Peanut's fifth since we skipped last week's due to his cold.

Most of this lesson was reinforcement of the previous weeks' learnings, but Peanut made a marked improvement on his time underwater by holding his breath for 6 seconds. Watch closely and you'll also see him kicking his legs.

I always wondered how you'd know if the babies actually held their breath underwater during this exercise, well, I got my answer. One of the 11 month olds ascended coughing, gagging, and hysterically crying because swallowed some of the hyperchlorinated water.

The instructor introduced a new lesson called the torpedo. Basically, you pretend your baby is a torpedo, moving through water. You help him float on his belly by holding him from behind and under his arms. Then, you dip the baby head first into the water and push him to the edge of the pool where he is supposed to grab on and save his life. Unfortunately, our little torpedo has no interest in that. Instead, he stares at the edge of the pool and uses his little hands to splash the water in front of him, wearing a big toothless grin.

Progress Report
Lesson 1 - 2 seconds underwater.
Lesson 2 - 2-3 seconds underwater.
Lesson 3 - 3-4 seconds underwater.
Lesson 4 - 5 seconds underwater.

Lesson 6 - 6 seconds underwater. Starting to place his hands on the side of the pool, also called the monkey crawl, but lets go after half a second.
