Road Trip!

After much debate and a pep talk from Jared, I agreed that we needed to suck it up and head to Houston to see some of our closest friends. The allure of meeting our friends' new daughter and see a bunch of friends at a birthday party were too hard to pass up. So, I booked a room on Hotwire, which meant we were on the non-refundable hook to go.

The snacks were packed and bags loaded. It was time to take our first long, overnight road trip. Was traveling with Rocky and Peanut going to drive me into the insane asylum?

There were 3 big hurdles to overcome: (1) driving to Houston, (2) sleeping in a hotel, and (3) driving home. We overcame hurdle #1 by traveling during Peanut's naptime and right after nursing Rocky. Both kids would have slept the entire way but we had to stop for gas. We used that opportunity to feed Rocky. Getting a suite with 2 beds made a huge difference with hurdle #2. There'd be no way we'd get any sleep if Peanut shared our bed so giving Peanut his own bed was key. My only concern was him falling off the bed which never manifested itself. Rocky slept in the other room so night feedings wouldn't wake everyone up. We breezed by the last hurdle because Peanut was worn out at the birthday party and Rocky was very full after slurping down a big bottle before hitting the road. Again, both kids slept 2 hours out of the 2.5 hours ride with a quick pit stop to feed Rocky.

Our first overnight road trip with 7 week old Rocky and Peanut was a huge success. I am so glad Jared convinced me to do it.

Tips for a successful road trip with 2 kids:
-- Drive during naptime
-- Leave immediately after a full feeding
-- Stay in a suite
-- Make sure your gas tank is full so you don't have to stop

It was so good to see you guys! We're so glad to have had the opportunity to meet Rocky too. We'll see you in January for Peanut's birthday.
