Today in Rocky's World

Rocky is doing well in her new school and already saying a few words in Spanish.  She's hit it off with a couple of girls in her class and seems to really like her teachers too.  In addition to a new school and being immersed in Spanish all day, we did not send a pacifier for naptime and bought the catered lunch at school.  If you know Rocky, these two changes are huge!  She's addicted to her "binky", but did not have any problems napping at school.  A total surprise to me.  Then there's the food.  My daughter, who only likes five foods, was not happy and very hungry the first few days.  We made sure to feed her a big breakfast at home, but felt strongly that the healthy catered lunches at school would help expand her palette.  She's been in school for one month and has tasted for the first time:  ham, watermelon, green beans, and broccoli (which she calls blah-ko-lee).  Rocky is learning that she kind of likes raw carrots, meat loaf, fresh apples, and pulled pork.

Going back to the "binky", J and I always knew we wanted to get rid of it before she turned three.  With her new school routine established, the time had come.  It's been 10 nights.  I guess not having a pacifier at school was fine, but taking it away at bedtime was unacceptable.  For the first 5 nights, she tortured us for taking away her favorite thing in the whole wide world.  On night 6, instead of taking 3 hours for her to fall asleep, it took only two.  It's slowly getting better.  I still have nightmares from Peanut's binky withdrawal a few years ago, which took one entire month for life to get back to normal.  I dreaded binky removal, but knew it was the last big hurdle J and I would have to deal with ... until ... perhaps Rocky started dating and driving.

Rocky is a spirited, animated, happy, and loving girl.  She is daring and more mature in many ways than Peanut was at this age.  Not to be shown up by her big brother, here's Rocky showing off her diving skills into 8 feet of water.
