The Gros Piton and Petite Piton are volcanic plugs in St. Lucia and a five minute drive from our friend's home. Coming here, J and I knew we wanted to take advantage of all St. Lucia has to offer, so the hike was one our must do list. Two miles up, two miles down, 2 hours up, 2 hours down, 9,000 steps up, 9,000 steps down. Sounds doable.
The first half was a tease. The gradual slope, which our guide called moderate, lulled us into a false sense of confidence. Yes, we were bouldering and there were moments we stopped to catch our breath, but we had no idea what was around the corner. (Of course, this local 40+ year old man is not breaking a sweat.)
The halfway point hits, which our guide called strenuous. We knew the honeymoon was over. Imagine climbing a Stairmaster for one hour straight in 90% humidity. My heart was beating out of my chest and not an inch of my clothes were dry, but in the end, we can brag that we made it to the summit!
