Destination: San Antonio, Texas
Length of Stay: 3 days, 2 nights
Friday
9:00AM11:30AM - Depart for San Antonio. The first annual Slosberg Family Vacation got off to a rocky start. Kim "Clark Griswold" Slosberg's itinerary clearly stated that we were going to leave the house by 9:00AM. Reality was, after stuffing the car with half of our belongings and enough diapers to last us a year, wheels rolled at 11:30AM. Lesson #1: Add 2 hours to any scheduled departure.- The Slosbergs check into the Drury Plaza Hotel and fed the baby his first jar of store bought sweet potatoes, which he seemed to enjoy. Up to this time, Peanut has only eaten homemade food. Afterwards, the three of us walked to Market Square for a good ole Tex Mex lunch and strolled around the market enjoying our tourist status.
- The rest of the afternoon was spent napping and swimming.
- We decided to grab a very quick burger at Waxy's Irish Pub on the Riverwalk. Lesson #2: Any restaurant with "pub" in its name is probably not the best place for dinner with a 7 month old on a Friday night because there's a 99% chance that an 80's cover band will be playing.
- Before heading to the San Antonio Zoo, the Slosberg gang grabbed some lunch at a nearby restaurant. Once Jared and I finished our meal, it was time to turn our attention to Peanut. Jared held Peanut while I fed him some jarred carrots. There's a myth that babies dislike green-colored foods, but apparently they don't like jarred carrots either. As soon as it went into his mouth, he spit it right back out. After about 8 spoonfuls, Jared and I gave up. We headed back to the hotel, pleaded with the woman at the registration desk for some left over bananas from breakfast, and continued with part 2 of Peanut's lunch. Lesson #3: Test any new baby foods at home.
- We made it to the zoo late that afternoon, during the hottest time of the day. Even so, we still had a great time watching the monkies play, hippos swim, and rhinos poo. My favorite was the okapi, a giraffe-zebra hybrid. Jared and I love giraffes and this little guy was a smaller version of the original.
- Peanut had his first sleepover Saturday night at Ba Ngoai's house. My mom watched Peanut as Jared and I had an amazing date night. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, The Palm, and got to hear all about how the restaurant got started. Then, we took a romantic stroll down the Riverwalk. Lesson #4: Date nights rock - always make time for them!
- The best part of date night was Sunday morning when we slept in! It's so easy to forget how good it feels to wake up when you want to.
- Since we know the assistant general manager of the hotel, Big Man on Campus Ben V., we got a extra extended check-out and went swimming again after we picked up Peanut from Ba Ngoai's house.
- Finally, after a delicious lunch in the Quarry (my old stomping grounds), we drove back home.
