Petting the Chicks and Pigging Out

We had a fun day petting the chicks, teasing the toms, and learning about organic farming at J's cousin's friend's farm in Oregon.

There's so much that goes into running a farm. This visit gave me a greater appreciation of all the farmers who produce the food we eat, especially the small, family farmers. J and I loved being out in the fresh air and enjoyed seeing all the vegetables in their natural habitat, but don't get me wrong, we also know we're definitely city folk. We'll do our part to support family farms by shopping at farmers' markets and eating locally when possible, but you won't catch us milking a cow any time soon.

While on the farm, we learned about:
* Flood irrigation with recycled water.
* Composting.
* The importance of not naming the meat chickens, turkeys, and pigs. (I guess this goes for any other meat that winds up on your dinner table.)
* Why toms have the weird soul patch looking thing on your chest feathers. (Sign of virility.)
* How the state of Oregon encourages farming by irrigating the land for you, charging very little for non-potable water, and making the land very affordable.

Enough of the whole "I'm Green" bit. Our favorite part was picking and pigging out on the blueberries and Italian plums. Peanut's caught red-handed in this video eating blueberries from this tiny bush that produced the sweetest and crispest fruit imaginable.
