This Type A mom has been met with her biggest challenge: potty training. My goal was to have Peanut out of diapers by 18 months (or earlier). Two years would have been the latest and considered a failure, but today I'm looking at the calendar and Peanut turns 2.5 in a few weeks and I am not even close to getting him interested in the process.
It's a big deal to Peanut to do things by himself, but going poo poo in the potty is not one of them. When Nana Ruthie Pooh (A-Pooh) was here, he learned which pairs of glasses she uses to read versus watch TV. He also understands multiple languages, has an incredible memory, and sits in front of the computer and says things like "I want to talk to A-Pooh on Skype" and one time managed to reach her.
All of my mom friends whose kids are potty trained say, "Oh, he'll do it when he's ready." I want to be one of those people who offers that supportive statement, but secretly thinks "so glad my kid isn't sh*tting in his pants anymore". Others have told me these mystical stories of their 2.5+ year olds just waking up one day and deciding they're ready. From that point on, they got rid of diapers all together, even during naps and at night.
One of my girlfriends took her daughter to Vietnam for one month this summer to visit family and came back with a Vietnamese speaking, fully potty trained two-year-old. While over there, she sent her daughter to preschool where not only was she immersed in the language, but was taught to use the potty via the bare bottom method. For $35 a month, the staff would hand wash her soiled clothes too. If I wasn't 6 months pregnant, I'd be on the next flight.
I think our next step is to go the bare bottom route, but I just can't bear thinking of urine and bowel movements being deposited on my hardwood floors, rugs, and sofas. In addition to being Type A, I'm also a bit of a neat freak. I know it will happen and have significantly relaxed about it, but it doesn't mean I don't think about it.
